A Look at The Somwa Foundation in Action.

Mentoring Program:

Somwa brother 2 brother, sister 2 sister mentoring program improves young people's attitude while dealing with the loss of their mothers. We encourage students to stay motivated and focused on their education. Somwa provides a positive way for children to spend their free time.

Somwa Scholarship Fund:

The scholarship program helps provide tuition and financial support for children & young adults. Students must maintain satisfactory grades and participate in service to their communities.

Somwa Holiday Celebration:

Somwa will help children & young adults celebrate the holidays by providing toys and gifts for the entire family. On December 19th, 2009 Somwa will provide toys for the New Wave Family Center/Women's Care Prevention & Support at The Michael Palm Center for AIDS Care & Support at GMHC NYC.

Somwa Spoken Words:

Somwa will create a platform for children & young adults to express themselves through poetry and creative writing. We will have events such as talent shows, poetry slams, and open mic's.

AIDS WALK NY: Team In Memory Of Wanda:

The Somwa Foundation is the proud sponsor for "Team In Memory Of Wanda". In 1996, this team was created with only 4 walkers in memory of Wanda Buggs who died at the young age of 39. As of 2009, the team has grown to over 250 walkers.

Giving back to Kenya
In 2010 Shacazia L. Brown traveled to The Kajiado Childrens Home in Africa (Kenya) southwest of Nairobi. She was able to volunteer and give back to 80 children who have lost their mother to AIDS. She lived with them for two weeks and was able to sponsor 3 children ages 5, 6 and 14. SOMWA Kenya is in the developing stages and will build a primary school in 2011. The SOMWA Foundation 2nd Annual Toy Drive
On Sunday 11/21/10 the entire community came together and made a difference at the Hip Hop Culture Center in Harlem. The community was able to celebrate with a cause by bringing a new unwrapped toy ages 0 months - 16 years old. Guest speakers included Dr. Marjorie Hill CEO GMHC. Toys will be distributed to children who have lost their mother to AIDS or who are living at home and their mothers are HIV positive. Toys will be distributed to the following organizations: Women's Care, Prevention & Support Services (GMHC) The Kajiado Children's home (Africa) and Haiti

SOMWA Holiday Party
December 2009 The SOMWA Foundation was able to have a Holiday Party in the gym at the Harlem Childrens Zone. SOMWA provided food, music, face painting, haircuts and toys for over 350 kids affected by AIDS. With the help of 125 volunteers and donations from the community SOMWA was able to make every mother & child dream come true.

SOMWA Dorney Park Trip
SOMWA was able to take over 175 familes to Dorney Park with the help of the community in August 2010. Every child was able to enjoy unlimited food and icecream. SOMWA had a total of 75 committed volunteers and 4 Academy charter buses.
